Translating Strings
Previous Topic  Next Topic

The "Strings" tab is found within Translations and has two sections. Unlike the other translation tabs, "Strings" contains the original, not a copy, but the original Strings and the Translated Strings. i.e. it is here that you add your new Strings as well as translate them.

Project Strings

There are two main parts to this screen. At the top is the "PROJECT STRINGS" - the Translator never gets to see this section. This is where you add your strings. When you Cascade your changes they will appear in the bottom part of the screen, the "TRANSLATION" section. To add a new string simply click the [+] button above the StringID field. To delete a string, use the [-] button. You can edit the StringID by clicking on the Edit button next to the Delete button. In the screenshot below you can see that the StringIDs are prefixed with IDS_ and there are no spaces. This is simply a style that we follow when translating the menus and captions within Fast-Help. But you can use any method that suits you.

Notes for the Translator

Sometimes a string may not be clear to a Translator, especially when it is not in context, such as a single word. So you can use the Notes field to add notes for your Translator. You can also paste in screenshots or use the Insert Image toolbar icon to insert an image. When the Translator moves to a string, if you have added a note for that string then the note will appear, otherwise the note field will not be visible.

Although you can add strings in one at a time using the [+] button, we store all our strings in a text file and import it into Fast-Help International using the toolbar button.

Each string must have a unique StringID as in the screen-shot below:-

Translating the Strings

Like many of the other translation tabs, simply click on one of the strings listed on the left and translate the text that appears on the right and click the green translation icon when finished.

The Translated Strings do not have any impact on your compiles, but you may wish to save them to file for inclusion as strings in your application. Click the icon to export your translated strings to a text file. Fast-Help International  automatically saves your file as a UTF-8 Unicode text file, allowing you maximum flexibility in supporting all languages. You can control the export format in Project Settings.

Note: You can hide this tab from the Translator. See "The Status Tab"
